James' father was Archibald Galloway and his mother was Janet Galbraith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Galloway and Helen McLauchlan. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Archibald, John, Mary, Ellen, Janet, Janet and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
