Mary's father was Alexander Fraser and her mother was Isabella Adam. Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Helen Hamilton. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Alexander, John, Maggie, Helen, Isabella, Jessie and Jane. She was the third youngest of the eight children. She died at the age of 70 in 1930 in Largs.
