John's father was John Fraser and his mother was Margaret Dalziel.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, William, Robert, Catrine and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
