Sarah's father was John Docherty and her mother was Susanna Martin.  Her maternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. She had four brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Robert, John, Margaret, Jane, Susan, Mary, Isabella and Isabella.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
