Robert's father was John Docherty and his mother was Susanna Martin.  His maternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, John, Margaret, Sarah, Jane, Susan, Mary, Isabella and Isabella.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
