Isabella's father was John Docherty and her mother was Susanna Martin.  Her maternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. She had four brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Robert, John, Margaret, Sarah, Jane, Susan, Mary and Isabella.  She was the second youngest of the eleven children.  She died at the age of 1 in 1880 in Dalmellington.
