Robert's father was David Dick and his mother was Janet Grant.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Grant and Isabell Marshall. He had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Peter, Isabell, Janet, Jean, Ann and Marion.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died due to a medical problem, cerebral congestion, duration 8 days, at the age of 74 on September 29th, 1877 in Mid Calder.²
