George's father was David Dick and his mother was Janet Grant.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Grant and Isabell Marshall. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Peter, Isabell, Janet, Jean, Ann and Marion.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died due to a medical problem, prostate enlargement, cystitis, 14 days, at the age of 72 on May 23rd, 1873 in Uphall.²
