Jean's father was David Dick and her mother was Janet Grant.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Grant and Isabell Marshall. She had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Robert, Peter, Isabell, Janet, Ann and Marion.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
