Mary's father was John Cunningham and her mother was Mary Steel Mossman. Her paternal grandparents were Archibald Cunningham and Elisabeth Anderson. She had three brothers and six sisters, named William, John, James, Catherine, Elisabeth, Helen, Helen, Margaret and Janet. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.³
