James' father was Joseph Cummings and his mother was Martha Cuthbert. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Cuthbert and Charlotte Robertson. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named George, Gavin, Hugh, George, Joseph, Hugh, John, Charlotte, Margaret, Grace and Mary. He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
