Charlotte's father was Joseph Cummings and her mother was Martha Cuthbert. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh Cuthbert and Charlotte Robertson. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named James, George, Gavin, Hugh, George, Joseph, Hugh, John, Margaret, Grace and Mary. She was the oldest of the twelve children.
