Gavin's father was Joseph Cummings and his mother was Martha Cuthbert. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Cuthbert and Charlotte Robertson. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named James, George, Hugh, George, Joseph, Hugh, John, Charlotte, Margaret, Grace and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 65 in 1954 in Shotts.
