Margaret's father was Dalrymple Bowman and her mother was Annie Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were Dalrymple Bowman and Jane Taylor. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Dalrymple, John, Dalrymple, Mary and Jane. She was the youngest of the six children.
