Jane's father was Dalrymple Bowman and her mother was Annie Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were Dalrymple Bowman and Jane Taylor. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Dalrymple, John, Dalrymple, Mary and Margaret. She was the third youngest of the six children.
