William's father was David Bone and his mother was Margaret Smith.  His paternal grandparents were James Bone and Janet Duncan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, David, John, Alexander, Margaret and Elspeth.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 24 in 1836.¹
