Alexander's father was Robert Barr and his mother was Isabella Hamilton.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Hamilton and Sara Fraser. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Andrew, Alexander, John, William, Hugh, James, Margaret, Sarah, Mary and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 2 on July 4th, 1864 in Dalry.
