Margaret's father was Thomas Aitkine and her mother was Agnes Bishop.  Her paternal grandparents were John Aikman and Agnes Bapty; her maternal grandparents were John Bishop and Elspeth Bell. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Archibald, James, Robert, John, Janet, Hellen and Elice.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
