John's father was Thomas Aitkine and his mother was Agnes Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were John Aikman and Agnes Bapty; his maternal grandparents were John Bishop and Elspeth Bell. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Archibald, James, Robert, John, Janet, Hellen, Margaret and Elice.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
