Sarah's father was James Aird Aitken and her mother was Mary Gray Flanagan. Her paternal grandparents were Matthew Aitken and Jane Aird. She had a brother and two sisters, named Matthew, Mary and Jane. She was the youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 71 in 1945 in Paisley.
