Matthew was born in 1816 in Ayr.1 2   Matthew's father was James Aitken and his mother was Elizabeth Norah.  He was an only child.  He died due to a medical problem, Mesenteric disease, at the age of 45 on April 29th, 1861 in St. Quivox.3
