Sarah's father was Matthew Aitken and his mother was Jane Aird.  His paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Elizabeth Norah; his maternal grandparents were James Aird and Jane McCrorie. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Matthew, William, Jean, Elizabeth and Grace.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
