Grace's father was Matthew Aitken and her mother was Jane Aird.  Her paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Elizabeth Norah; her maternal grandparents were James Aird and Jane McCrorie. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Matthew, William, Sarah, Jean and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
