George Catlett was born in 1792.  George Catlett's father was Nicholas of Totterdown Hill Taliaferro and his mother was Ann Taliaferro.  His paternal grandparents were Hay Taliaferro and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Col John of Dissington Taliaferro and Ann. He had three brothers and a sister, named John Champe, Mary Willis, William Thornton and Matilda Battaile.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Carr Blasingame, Lawrence Washington, James Hay, Nicholas, Marshall Howe and Ann Patterson.
