Joseph was born on July 10th, 1754 in Frederick co., Va.  Joseph's father is Thomas Swearingen and his mother is Sarah Morgan.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Van Swearingen and Lydia Jane Riley; his maternal grandparents are Richard Morgan and Jane Taylor. He had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Thomas, Van, Andrew, Benoni and Drucilla.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 67 in August 1821 in Jefferson County, VA.
