William was born in 1834 in Stockton, Durham, England.  William's father was Francis Marshall and his mother was Hannah Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Stewart; his maternal grandparents were John Robinson and Hannah Laverick. He had three sisters named Jane, Margaret Steward Stewart and Sarah Ann.  He was the youngest of the four children.
