Jane was born about 1826 in Stockton, Durham, England.  Jane's father was Francis Marshall and her mother was Hannah Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Stewart; her maternal grandparents were John Robinson and Hannah Laverick. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Margaret Steward Stewart and Sarah Ann.  She was the oldest of the four children.
