Sarah Ann was born in 1831 in Stockton, Durham, England.  Sarah Ann's father was Francis Marshall and her mother was Hannah Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Stewart; her maternal grandparents were John Robinson and Hannah Laverick. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Jane and Margaret Steward Stewart.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
