Margaret Steward Stewart was born in 1828 in Stockton, Durham, England.  Margaret Steward Stewart's father was Francis Marshall and her mother was Hannah Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Stewart; her maternal grandparents were John Robinson and Hannah Laverick. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Jane and Sarah Ann.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
