Singleton was born in 1828 in California, IN.  Singleton's father was Ambrose Riggs Marshall and his mother was Cynthia Roby.  His paternal grandparents were Jesse Franklin Marshall and Catharine. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Leonard, Isom Isam RIggs, Nelson, Matilda Ann, Louisa, Martha, Nancy, Cynthia, Martha, Nancy, Catharine and Malinda.  He was the second oldest of the thirteen children.  He died at the age of 89 in 1917.
