Daniel was born about 1790 in Nelson  Co.,  Kentucky.  Daniel's father was Mark Marshall and his mother was Rebecca Boceay Coy.  His paternal grandparents were John Marshall and Deborah LNU; his maternal grandparents were John from Old Town Hundred MD Coy Sr and Sarah. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Mark Jr, James, Robert, John, Benjamin, Phoebe, Rebecca, Deborah and Hannah.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He had three half-brothers named James, Garrett and Thomas.
