Pollard was born in 1814.  Pollard's father was John Goin and his mother was Agnes Wilson.  His paternal grandparents were Pvt Joseph Goin and Judith Pollard. He had three brothers named John, Thomas Gowen and Jesse.  He was the youngest of the four children.
