John was born in 1810.  John's father was John Goin and his mother was Agnes Wilson.  His paternal grandparents were Pvt Joseph Goin and Judith Pollard. He had three brothers named Thomas Gowen, Jesse and Pollard.  He was the oldest of the four children.
