John was born in 1782.  John's father was Pvt Joseph Goin and his mother was Judith Pollard.  His paternal grandparents were William McGoin Gowan Gowing Gowen Going Goen Goan Goin (Lumbee) and Anester Honesty Anastascia Sullivan; his maternal grandparents were Francis Pollard and Elizabeth Betty Phelps. He had three sisters named Nancy, Elizabeth and Jane.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 42 in 1824.
