Tei was born on September 19th, 1891 in Fukushima, Japan.  Tei's father was Matsusaburo Motoi and her mother was Ei Ono.  Her paternal grandparents were Kichi matsu Motoi and Matsu Asai; her maternal grandparents were Yakichi Ono and Nami Ono. She had a brother and three sisters, named Keisuke, Tami, Hana and Chiyo.  She was the oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 58 on November 18th, 1949 in Honolulu, Hawaii (Nuuanu Memorial Park).

‌Tei and Shichiro were married in a religious ceremony in 1909 in Higashiyama, Fukushima, Japan.  They had three sons named Sadao, Tetsui and Saburo.
