William, known as Rufus, was born in 1056 in Normandy.1   Rufus' father was William (The Conqueror) de Normandie and his mother was Matilda (Maud) of Flanders.  His paternal grandparents were Robert (The Magnificent) Normandy II and Heleve Arlette de Falaise; his maternal grandparents were Baldwin of Flanders V and Princess Adelais Capet of France. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Curthose, Richard, Beauclerc, Gundrella, Cecilia, Alice, Agatha, Constance and Matilda. He had a half-sister named Gundrada.
