William was born in 0955 in Normandie.¹ William's father was Duke of Normandy Richard (San Peur, The Fearless) Normandy I and his mother was Papia de Normandy. His paternal grandparents were Duke Guillaume I (Longue Epaee) Normandy and Sprote Adela de Senlis; his maternal grandparents were King of Haithabu Ragnald Swenosson and Duchess Gerletta of Normandy. He had a brother and five sisters, named Geoffroy, Sprota, Fredesende, Muriella, Hawise and Pappia. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had six half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Godfrey, The Good, Robert, Geoffrey, Mauger, William, Havlive, Beatrice, Emma, Matilda and Beatrice.
