Richard was born in 1503 in Adeston, Devonshire, England. Richard's father was Fulk Prideaux and his mother was Katherine Poyntz. His maternal grandparents were Humphrey Poyntz and Elizabeth Pollard. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Nicholas, Humphrey, Rev. Robert, Margaret, Alice, Elizabeth and Joan. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
