Mary was born about February 1749 in Augusta Co, VA. Mary's father was John Kerr and her mother was Lucy Pickens.  Her paternal grandparents were James Kerr and Martha Ball. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named Andrew, William, James, Jane, Barbara, Lucy, Martha, Isabella, Elizabeth, Letitia and Margaret.  She was the youngest of the twelve children.
