James was born about 1734 in PA.  James' father was John Kerr and his mother was Lucy Pickens.  His paternal grandparents were James Kerr and Martha Ball. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named Andrew, William, Jane, Barbara, Lucy, Martha, Isabella, Elizabeth, Letitia, Margaret and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
