Sarah Catherine was born about 1863 in Buncombe Co., N.C.. Sarah Catherine's father was John Holmes GENTRY and her mother was Sarah R. BALL. Her maternal grandparents were Sampson Harrison BALL and Rosanna NORMAN. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William Sampson C., Thomas Jefferson, George Washington T., Elijah Young, Rosanne E., Lucinda, Elizabeth S., Harriet Jane, Laura Emmaline and Sophronia Josephine. She was the youngest of the eleven children.-
