Elijah Young was born on July 3rd, 1856 in Buncombe Co., N.C.. Elijah Young's father was John Holmes GENTRY and his mother was Sarah R. BALL. His maternal grandparents were Sampson Harrison BALL and Rosanna NORMAN. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named William Sampson C., Thomas Jefferson, George Washington T., Rosanne E., Lucinda, Elizabeth S., Harriet Jane, Laura Emmaline, Sophronia Josephine and Sarah Catherine. He was the third youngest of the eleven children.-
