George M. was born in August 1876 in Green Co., KY. George M.'s father was Lewis Oscar Despain and his mother was Amanda J. Johnston. His paternal grandparents were John B. Despain and Malinda A. Bazor. He had a brother and three sisters, named John Henry, Mary Green, Emile T. and Rosa Lee. He was the second oldest of the five children.
