Edmund was born in 1524.  Edmund's father was Anthony Irby and his mother was Alice Bountayne.  His paternal grandparents are Robert Irby and Joan Thimblely; his maternal grandfather is John Bountayne. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, Leonard, Kenelm, Giles, Edward, Margaret, Catherine, Jane, Rose and Dorothy.  He is the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
