John was born in 1425 in Yester Castle, Giffard, East Lothian, Scotland. John's father was David Hay and his mother is Mary Douglas. His paternal grandfather was William Hay and his paternal grandmother is Alicia De la Hay; his maternal grandparents were George Douglas and Mary Stewart. He had a sister named Janet. He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers named William and John. He died at the age of 83 in September 1508 in Yester Castle, Giffard, East Lothian, Scotland.General Notes

" ... the eldest son, was created a peer by solemn investiture in
Parliament, by the title of Lord Hay of Yester, 29th January, 1487-8. He
married, first, a daughter of Lord Lindsay of the Byres, by whom he had
an only son, John, his successor. He took for his second wife the
daughter and heiress of Sir William Cunningham of Belton, who bore him
two sons and two daughters."
