James was born on September 12th, 1798 in Leacock Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. James' father was William Hamilton and his mother was Maria Barbara Keighler. His paternal grandparents were William Hamilton and Jean McIlvaine. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Mary, Rebecca and Jane. He was the second youngest of the six children. He had two half-sisters named Mary and Sarah P. He died at the age of 52 on September 13th, 1850 in Steubenville, Jefferson Co, OH.General Notes
