Joan Elizabeth was born in Talby, Yorkshire, England.  Joan Elizabeth's father was King Henry ("Beauclerc", "Fine Scholar") Plantagenet I of England and her mother was Isabel de Beaumont.  Her paternal grandparents were King William ("the Conqueror") I of England and Matilda of Flanders; her maternal grandparents were Robert de Beaumont of Meulan and Elizabeth de Crepi. She had a brother and two sisters, named "the King's Son", Constance Matilda and Alix. She had five half-brothers and nine half-sisters, named Rainald, William, Henry FitzHenry, Haldane, "Strongbow", Lady of the English, "The Empress", Maud, Eustacia, Emme, Sibyl Elizabeth, Annora, Mathilde and Basilia.

‌Joan Elizabeth and Fergus were married in a religious ceremony about 1124 in Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland.  They had two sons and three daughters, named Uchtred, Gilbert, Aufrica, Bethoc and Margaret.
