Joan was born about 1188 in London, Middlesex, England.  Joan's father was King John ("Lackland") I of England and her mother is Agatha de Ferrers.  Her paternal grandparents were King Henry Curtmantle FitzEmpress ("Plantagenet") Plantagenet II of England and Princess Eleanor of Aquitaine; her maternal grandparents were Earl Walkelin de Ferrieres V of Derby and Sybil de Braose. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Henry, Richard, Richard, Joan and Eleanor.  She died in February 1237 in Aberconwy, Arllechwedd Isaf, Caernarvonshire, Wales.  She was buried in Llan-faes, Dindaethwy, Anglesey, Wales.

‌Joan and "the Great" were married in a religious ceremony after April 16th, 1205 in England.  They had a son and five daughters, named Llywelyn, "the Dark", "Ddu", Elen, Angharad, Margred and Marared Drwyndon.
