Llewelyn Fawr, known as "the Great", was born in 1173 in Dolwyddelan, Nantoconwy.  "the Great"'s father was Iowerth ("Drwyndwn") ap Owain Gwynned and his mother is Margaret ferch Madog.  His paternal grandfather was Prince Owain ("Gwynedd") ap Gruffydd of North Wales and his paternal grandmother is Gladys verch Llywarch; his maternal grandfather was King Madog ap Maredydd of Powys and his maternal grandmother is Susanna verch Gruffydd.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 67 on April 11th, 1240 in Aberconwy Abbey, Arllechwedd Isaf, Caernarvonshire, Wales.


"the Great"'s first family with Princess Joan of England

‌"the Great" and Joan were married in a religious ceremony after April 16th, 1205 in England.  They had a son and five daughters, named Llywelyn, "the Dark", "Ddu", Elen, Angharad, Margred and Marared Drwyndon.

‌"the Great" and Tangwystl were married in a religious ceremony.  They had a son named Gruffudd.
