John R. was born in 1840 in Green Co.,Kentucky.  John R.'s father was Calloway Underwood and his mother was Mary Ann Oaks.  His paternal grandparents were Hiram Underwood and Celia Buley. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hiram Calloway ,Rev., Green Berry, Calloway T., Robert T., Celia, Jane, Mary Ann, Nancy, Nancy E., Caroline and Harriet Susan.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 58 on August 21st, 1898 in Carroll Co.,Missouri.

‌John R. and Delilah Ann were married in a religious ceremony on September 7th, 1859 in Taylor Co.,Kentucky.  They had two sons and three daughters, and also a child of unknown gender, named Jenkins, George, Sallie, Levinia, Deborah G. and L. F..
